Bunny Care Basics

Have you recently adopted a bunny? Good for you! Rabbits are super cute and lovable little pets. These adorable furballs do have different needs than dogs and cats, however, so you may need to do some research on how to properly care for your pet. A local Matthews, NC vet offers some helpful bunny care tips below.

Cage

First and foremost, make sure your adorable has a big, comfy cage. Floppy’s cage should be big enough to allow her to hop, stand up, stretch out, and play without tripping over her belongings. We recommend getting a mesh or wire cage with a solid floor.

Accessories

Once you have the cage picked out, you’ll need to add some accessories. Choose a safe, suitable substrate. Aspen is a good choice. Avoid pine and cedar products, as they are toxic to small animals. Your bunny will also need a good hidey-hole. A litterbox and hayrack are optional, but you may find them very useful.

Toys

Floppy will need plenty of fun toys to play with, including lots of chew toys. Many wood, wicker, and cardboard items are fine. Just avoid giving your pet anything with sharp edges, small parts, or dangling ropes. You’ll also want to avoid anything coated in varnish, stain, paint, or glitter.

Veterinary Care

Just like any other pet, Floppy will look and feel better with regular veterinary care. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. Between appointments, watch for signs of illness, such as lethargy, fever, or diarrhea. Contact your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Grooming

Bunnies love to be pampered! Brushing your cute pet regularly is a great way to bond with and spend time with her. You’ll also need to clip your furry pal’s claws.

Food

Make sure that Floppy gets plenty of fresh grass hay, such as Timothy hay. This should actually make up the bulk of your furry friend’s diet. You can supplement this with commercial pellets, fresh fruits and veggies, and the occasional treat. Ask your vet for specific recommendations, including serving sizes, safe and unsafe foods, and suitable treats.

Love

Love is the secret ingredient in any good pet care routine. Spend time with Floppy, and pay attention to her. Bunnies can be quite the little cuddlebugs!
