Nutrition & Weight Management

“The doctor of the future will no longer treat with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.”  ~ Thomas Edison

This wise quote can be applied to both humans and our animal counterparts. What you feed your pet and how much he or she weighs are important components in his or her overall health and longevity. In fact, a healthy diet and adequate exercise can even help you manage certain medical conditions in a way that improves your pet’s quality of life.

The problem is, with so many different food products to choose from, and so much confusion surrounding the topic of weight control, managing these aspects of your pet’s health care can be challenging. What you need is the guidance of an expert. Someone who understands companion animal nutrition and can put your pet on the right path toward a lifetime of optimum health.

Fullwood Animal Hospital offers professional nutritional counseling and weight management services to help keep your pet healthy and fit. It starts with a detailed health analysis to determine your pet’s unique nutritional needs. This is accomplished with a thorough physical exam and consideration of several important factors, including your pet’s species, breed, age, current weight and present health status.

Once we’ve identified what your pet’s nutritional needs are, we will work on developing a diet that will best meet those needs. This may or may not include the use of prescription pet food, as these products tend to contain more nutrients and a higher quality of ingredients than over the counter products can offer. We’ll also discuss our recommendations on how much and how often you should be feeding your pet to control calorie intake and maintain a healthier weight.

Speaking of weight….the next step in our process is to make sure that the numbers on the scale are right where they should be for your pet. This is very important, since weight plays a direct role in an animal’s risk of illness or injury. We’ll advise you on what weight range would be ideal for your loved one, and then come up with an action plan – including diet and exercise – to both achieve that target weight range and continue to maintain it over time.

Lastly, we will revisit our plan from time to time to make sure it’s still as effective as it was originally designed to be. As pets get older, their bodies change and so do their health care needs – including those associated with nutrition and weight control. At certain intervals during your pet’s lifetime, we will re-evaluate our approach and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that we continue to achieve the results we are after.

Is your pet really eating what he or she should be? Could that little guy or gal stand to lose (or gain) a few pounds? Give us a call today! We can design a customized plan that will bring out the very best in your best friend.
