DIY Cat Furniture

November 15 2017
Does your cat have some furniture of her own? If so, that’s great! Our feline friends always benefit from having some things that were made specifically to suit their needs. You don’t have to break the bank buying cat furniture for Fluffy, however. There are all sorts of things you can make for your pet yourself! Read on for some great DIY furniture ideas from a local Matthews, NC vet.

Cat Tower

You can turn an old stepladder into a cute cat tower in just a few minutes. Add boards or planks to the steps to widen them out into kitty napping spots. You can also use an old bookcase or metal storage rack. Then, cover the whole thing in carpet or sisal rope to cover it. Instant happy cat!

Kitty Tent or Tipi

You can make Fluffy a cute little tent out of a wire hangar and an old tee shirt in just a few minutes. This is great for shy cats, as nervous kitties often feel safer in enclosed spaces. A pet tipi will take a little more work, and will require a trip to a local craft store, but in the end you’ll have a piece of pet furniture that is both comfortable and attractive. Look online for step-by-step directions.

Beds

Cats certainly are tired! Fluffy can sleep up to 20 hours a day. You can make cute beds for your drowsy pet out of hardshell suitcases or hatboxes by just adding some clean, soft blankets or pillows. To make your kitty’s bed look nice, use paint, wallpaper, contact paper, or stencils to dress it up. You can also turn an old sweater into a pet bed. Sew the wrists and waist closed, and then attach them to the torso, so that the sweater forms an O shape. Then, fill it with stuffing, and close up the neck. Voila!

Box Castle

Why not make your kitty a box castle? This is a great project for kids! Fluffy’s palace can be as simple or complex as you like. If you want something quick, just attach a few boxes together and cut doors between them. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, add windows, turrets, and towers for Her Furry Highness to explore.
