Summer is here! This may very well be Man’s Best Friend’s favorite season. After all, this is the perfect time for popular doggy activities, like playing Fetch, visiting parks, begging for treats at barbeques, and, of course, sniffing grass. Just be sure to put your pup’s safety first. In this article, a Matthews, NC vet offers summertime safety tips for Fido.

Heat

Overheating is one of the most serious summer dangers for Fido. After all, your furry pal is wearing a fur coat! Keep a close eye out for signs of heat exhaustion. Some common ones are panting, thick saliva, sunken eyes, dark urine, a warm back, restlessness, vomiting, diarrhea, a dry nose, and/or lethargy. If you notice these red flags, immediately give your pooch some water, take him to a cool area, and call your vet.

Veterinary Care

When it comes to pet care, an ounce of precaution is worth several pounds of cure. Keep your canine friend current on his vaccinations and parasite control products. Fido should also be microchipped and wearing ID tags at all times.

Water

Make sure your canine buddy always has plenty of cool, fresh water. You can drop an ice cube into your pet’s bowl on hot days, or give him one as a treat. If you take Fido out and about, always bring water with you. You may want to get collapsible dishes or a doggy water bottle with a dispenser.

Exercise

Be careful not to overexert your pooch in the heat. On sweltering days, limit your furry friend’s outdoor time during the middle of the day. Walk him and play with him in the mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler out.

Paw Care

Dogs’ paw pads are very delicate. Your canine companion can get burns or abrasions by running or walking on hot surfaces. Try to keep Fido on soft ground as much as possible. You can also put paw balm or wax on his paws.

Swimming

Does your furry buddy love swimming? Feel free to indulge Fido with a trip to your favorite pet-friendly swimming spot. Just put your pup’s safety first. Supervise your dog closely when he’s swimming, and never leave him unattended near water. Ask your vet for more information.
