Guinea pigs, or cavies, are very cute little pets, and are quite popular children’s pets. These adorable furballs aren’t hard to care for, but they do have some specific needs. Below, a Matthews, NC vet offers advice on caring for Guinea pigs.

Chew Toys

Guinea pigs have open-rooted teeth, so they need to chew a lot to prevent painful dental issues. Making sure your pet always has chew toys is very important! You can buy your furry pal’s things, but you can also make them out of common household items. The tubes from paper towel or toilet paper can make all sorts of great playthings! You can also create fun toys out of paper, cardboard, and many wooden items. Safety first, though: avoid anything with sharp edges, small parts. Painted or dyed items are also unsafe.

Veterinary Care

Watch for signs of illness, such as lethargy, reduced appetite, or unusual behavior. Call your vet immediately if you see any red flags!

Vitamin C

One thing that is very important for Guinea pig owners to know is that these little guys need lots of Vitamin C. Otherwise, they are prone to developing scurvy. Offer your cavy foods that contain Vitamin C. It’s worth noting that citrus fruits, which are high in Vitamin C, can be too acidic for these tiny furballs. Also, be picky with store-bought supplements. Many are high in sugar and, therefore, really not that great for your cute pet. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Hay

As noted above, cavies have open-rooted teeth. In the wild, Guinea pigs would wear their teeth down on tough roots and fibers. Therefore, you’ll have to give your tiny pal lots of grass hay, such as Timothy hay.

Buddies

Guinea pigs are very sociable, which is one reason they make such great pets. In fact, they are much happier with a roommate to play with and cuddle with. Just be sure to only keep same-sex pairs together.

TLC

Take time to bond with your furry pal slowly. Make sure your tiny buddy feels safe and secure. Pet and talk to him gently, and offer toys and treats to build his trust.
