Caring For A Sick Dog

May 15 2019
Just like people, dogs can be afflicted by illness and injury. It can be extremely sad and stressful to realize that your canine pal isn’t feeling well. Hopefully this goes without saying, but the first thing you should do if you know or suspect that your beloved pet is ill is take him to the vet. However, once you get Fido home again, he will need some extra TLC. Read on as a Matthews, NC vet offers advice on caring for a sick dog.

Instructions

First things first: Fido’s exact care needs will depend on the type and severity of his illness. Your vet will advise you on what is and isn’t good for him as he recuperates. Follow these instructions to the letter, and call with any questions. If you see any indication that your pooch could be getting worse, call your vet immediately.

Comfy Bed

Make sure that Fido has a clean, comfy doggy bed to recuperate in. Orthopedic beds are great, as they offer extra support. If your pet is having issues with vomiting or diarrhea, get a plastic mattress cover, and fit that to the bed. Then, put a comfy, old, washable blanket over that. You can also get some cheap throw blankets that you can toss if need be. That way, your dog will still be comfortable, but he won’t ruin his bed if he has an accident. You may also want to put your canine friend’s food and water bowls near his bed.

Quiet Time

This one depends on your household situation, however. If your dog and cat are best friends, you may find Fluffy curled up beside him, purring. This may be purrfectly fine, if your vet doesn’t object. If you have young children, and/or other pets that are energetic and frisky, set up a separate area for Fido, so he can rest quietly. Don’t isolate him too much, however: dogs get sad and lonely if they are by themselves too long.

Love

Dogs look to us to comfort them, care for them, and love them. Sometimes that is as simple as kissing Fido’s forehead, petting him, talking to him, or sitting beside his doggy bed. Just knowing that you’re there will soothe your pet, and make him feel loved. Do you have questions about your dog’s health or care? Contact us, your Matthews, NC vet clinic, anytime.
