Simple Ways to Bond With Your New Cat

July 15 2019
Cats can be very loving and affectionate little pets. These quirky little furballs are definitely able to form some very strong bonds with their humans! However, while some kitties will immediately hop into your lap and start purring, others are much more timid. If you’ve just adopted a scaredy-cat, you’ll need to give Fluffy time to adjust and feel safe. Read on as a Matthews, NC vet offers tips on bonding with your feline friend.

Make Home Cozy

Before you bring your furry pal home, you’ll want to do some shopping. Fluffy will need food, toys, treats, dishes, bedding, a litterbox, litter, and a carrier. Pet furniture is also recommended. You don’t have to break the bank buying purrniture, though: if you want to save money, consider going the DIY route. You’ll find some great ideas online!

Offer A Safe Space

Put your cat’s things in a quiet area, such as a spare room, and just let her relax and get used to her new home. This is doubly important for people who have other pets. You’ll need to introduce your furry friends slowly, over the course of several days. Put a comfy chair in Fluffy’s room for yourself, as you’ll be visiting frequently!

Playtime!

One great way to get Fluffy’s little motor going is to play with her regularly. Use toys that you can control, like a wand toy or laser pointer. This will make things more fun and more challenging for your cat.

Cat Chat

Talking to Fluffy is another good way to let her get used to you. Use a calm, friendly tone of voice. If you’re giving your kitty a new name, use it often to help her learn it.

Let Fluffy Approach You

Make sure to let your feline friend come to you when she wants attention. Don’t force attention on your kitty, and don’t pick her up if she doesn’t like being held. This is very important for gaining your cat’s trust!

Treats

Food is one of the best ways to win an animal’s trust. Offer Fluffy some yummy snacks. Store-bought treats are fine, but you can also give your furry buddy canned tuna in water; plain, cooked chicken or fish; or shredded deli meat.
