Have you recently decided to adopt a hamster? These adorable little furballs really do make cute and fun pets. But what does it take to keep Hammie content? A Matthews, NC vet offers some tips in this article.

Research Breeds

There are several different types of hamsters, and they all have slightly different care needs. Do plenty of research on your new pet! (One thing that is important to note: Syrian hamsters, which are the most popular breed, should always be kept by themselves.)

A Good Cage Is Key

Make sure your pet has a clean, comfy cage. Exact size requirements will vary a bit, depending on what type of hamster you have, but bigger is always better. You’ll need to add a suitable substrate, such as aspen. Avoid pine and cedar substrates, as they aren’t safe for small pets. Hammie will also need bedding, such as shredded tissue paper; a hidey-hole; a water bottle; and toys.

Don’t Let Hammie Get Cold!

Keep Hammie’s cage between 65 and 75 °F. This is very important! If hamsters get too cold, they will try to hibernate. Pet hamsters don’t know how to hibernate properly, so this is very dangerous for them. Ask your vet for more information.

Use Runabouts Carefully

Runabouts have become very popular for hamsters. It is fun watching Hammie go exploring! Just put safety first. Keep these adventures short and sweet. About 10-15 minutes is plenty. Also, never leave your furball unattended. Finally, only let your hamster use his runabout in safe areas. Keep him away from pools, stairs, fireplaces, and other hazards.

Offer Plenty Of Chew Toys

Hamsters have open-rooted teeth, and need lots of chew toys. Many wood, wicker, and paper items are fine. Look online for great DIY ideas!

Give Your Pet Snacks

Just like any other pet, hamsters love snacks. Some good treats are carrots, grapes, cooked egg, peaches, apples, mealworms, tomatoes, dog biscuits, cherries, and mangos. Hammie can also have small bits of cheese. Just don’t go overboard here: you don’t want your pet becoming obese!

Proper Location
