Leaving Your Cat Home Alone

February 15 2020
Does your feline friend stay home by herself while you go off to earn money for pet food and catnip? Cats are very independent, and can do just fine by themselves for short periods of time. However, you do want to take some steps to make Fluffy’s alone time more pleasant for her. A Matthews, NC vet offers tips on how to do that in this article.

Petproofing

Kitties are very playful and mischievous, and don’t necessarily know—or care—what is and isn’t safe for them to play with. Make your place safe for Fluffy by putting anything that could be dangerous for her out of paws’ reach. This includes plastic bags and ties, chemicals, medications, wires and cords, and anything small or sharp. You’ll also want to remove any toxic plants, and make sure your doors and windows close securely.

Entertainment

Fluffy may spend a chunk of her alone time napping, but even the drowsiest kitty can’t sleep all the time. Offer your frisky pet plenty of fun toys to entertain herself with. Just don’t leave wand toys out when you aren’t home: you don’t want your furball getting tangled up. Your feline pal will also enjoy a comfy window seat with a good view. Cats love birdwatching, and can spend hours just observing neighborhood wildlife.

Comforts

Small touches can help make Fluffy more comfortable, and keep her content. Turn a radio on for your pet before you leave. The sound of music and voices will provide mental stimulation, and keep your kitty from feeling lonely. If you will be out after dark, leave a light on as well. That way, your furry friend isn’t left sitting by herself in a dark house. Last but not least, keep your climate control going.

Tips

Cats are very emotional little furballs. They can get stressed, anxious, and/or lonely if they are left by themselves too much. If you will be gone for more than a day, have someone stop in to check on Fluffy and refresh her food and water. You may want to consider boarding for longer absences, especially if your furry buddy is a kitten or senior, and/or has health issues. Ask your vet for specific advice.
