6 Tips for Boarding Your Dog

March 1 2020

Will you be going out of town soon? If so, you may need to put your canine pal in a kennel while you are away. We can help! A local Matthews, NC vet offers some tips on boarding your pooch below.

Choose A Great Kennel

You don’t want to trust just anyone with the care of your furry best friend! Do some research, and ask for recommendations from your friends, family, coworkers, and, of course, your vet. You may also want to visit the kennel, just to get a feel for it. It’s worth noting that any decent kennel will require proof of Fido’s vaccinations, which should include the Bordetella vaccine.

Pack Wisely

Kennels all vary a bit on what they do and don’t want you to bring. Ask if bedding and toys will be provided, or if you should bring your dog’s things. Pack a few days’ extra food and medicine, in case you’re delayed. You may be able to leave Fido with something that smells like you, such as a tee shirt, which will be comforting for him.

Book A Trial Run

We recommend having your pooch visit us for a shorter trip, like an overnight visit, before taking him to the kennel for a longer stay. This will help Fido get accustomed to his hotel, which will make it easier for him next time.

Ask Questions

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Find out if the kennel will contact you with minor questions, or only in an emergency. Also, be sure you are clear on things like drop-off and pickup times and procedures. Finally, don’t forget to ask about perks and upgrades!

Be Clear

Does your pet have allergies? Is he terrified of thunderstorms? Offer any specific care instructions clearly, and both vocally and in writing. If possible, print them rather than handwrite them, especially if your penmanship isn’t that great.

Avoid Long Goodbyes

It’s always hard to say goodbye to a furry friend, even if it’s just for a few days. When Fido realizes that you’re leaving, he may whine or give you that sad stare, which will, understandably, pull your heartstrings. Make the drop-off short and sweet. It will be easier for both of you!
