Quarantining With Fido

April 7 2020
Quarantining With Fido We’re living through an unprecedented time, as the COVID-19 pandemic spreads out over the world. Man’s Best Friend can be a great source of comfort in these scary times. Read on as a local veterinarian offers some tips on quarantining with Fido. Exercise Even if you’ve been ordered to self-isolate, you can—and should—still walk your dog. The fresh air, sunlight, and exercise is good for both you and your furry friend, and will benefit you mentally and physically. However, you do want to practice caution. Stay at least six feet away from others, and wash your hands as soon as you return home. Toys If you have a playful, active pooch, you may find Fido getting a bit of cabin fever. Regular play sessions will help your pet burn off some of that zoom. You can play games like Fetch indoors, or hold a laser pointer for your pup to chase. (Bonus: this also provides comic relief. Dogs are absolutely adorable when they are running and playing!) Cuddles Dogs are loyal, loving, and intuitive, traits that are absolute blessings at times like this. Fido may sense that you’re anxious or uneasy, and may stick closer to you than usual. He may also put a paw on your leg, lean against you, or act a bit nervous himself. Giving your furry buddy cuddles, ear scritches, and belly rubs can be quite comforting, which is great for both of you. Plus, tail wags and puppy kisses make any day a bit better! Making Toys Do you have children? If so, you may be juggling working from home with caring for your little ones, or just trying to keep them occupied. One thing your youngsters can do is make some toys for your canine pal. You can make a tee shirt into a rope toy by cutting it into strips and then braiding the strips together. Another great dog toy can be made from an old pair of jeans: cut one leg off and tie big knots on each end. You’ll find lots more great options online. Training Does your four-legged friend obey basic commands, like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down? If not, spend some time working with him. Or, show Fido some cute tricks. That’s a great way to make the best of your time! Please reach out to us, your local vet clinic, anytime. We will get through this!
