June is Foster A Pet Month! Pets need fostering for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, it’s because they are too young to survive without constant care. Others may be healing from illness or injury, or may need socialization and/or training before being listed as adoptable. In some cases, pets need fostering because their humans are ill and/or no longer able to care for them, or are perhaps going away due to military deployment, work, or school. Think It Over
There are some great benefits to fostering pets. For one thing, it’s a much shorter commitment than actually adopting an animal. This can be very helpful, particularly for those who move a lot. It’s also a wonderful way to help animals in need! That said, you will need to consider your budget, schedule, and household, as well as any other pets you have. You may also need some training, and/or an in-home inspection.
Be Prepared To Say Goodbye
One of the hardest things about fostering a pet can also sometimes be the most beautiful. It’s not easy saying goodbye to an animal that you’ve become attached to! In fact, some people just can’t do it, which is how the term ‘foster fail’ came about. It isn’t exactly a bad thing when people to end up adopting their fosters. Have you decided to go for it? It’s time to find your foster! You may be surprised at how many pets need fostering. Start with local humane societies and animal shelters. You may also want to look into smaller rescue groups and/or organizations that help military personnel who have pets. Many of these organizations don’t have physical buildings, so they rely on others to care for their furry wards.
Other Options
If you aren’t ready to foster a pet yourself, you can still help. Many animal charities rely on donations to get by, so offering money or supplies will still be beneficial. Even spreading the word on social media can help!
